Yesterday marks one year since my Grandpa passed away. I can't believe it's been a year. It still seems like he'll call at any minute, or that I'll get a newspaper clipping from him in the mail. My mom called and sang me Happy Birthday on the phone on my birthday (well, she tried to sing a week early, actually)- and that's sweet... but it's his job. I think regularly as I'm watching Alex, how much they would enjoy one another- I can totally picture grandpa sitting at the dining room table with Alex on his knee, singing and doing his Donald Duck impersonation. I have a vision of him hugging Abby, SO proud of his granddaughter as a new Girl Scout. Then I remember. He's not there. Hell, the TABLE isn't even there any more. I have to keep reminding myself that he's here-there-wherever- he's watching us, and I know that he's singing to Alex and laughing with him. I know he's proud of Abby and all she does. I just miss him so much.
Abby's doing wonderfully in first grade. All "threes and fours" on her report card (that means she is 'meeting' or 'exceeding' expectations for first graders in ALL areas). We started up a Girl Scout troop and Abby is a Daisy Scout. She's loving it and so am I (as a leader of course- I SO have volunteer-itis). We're both making friends and learning a lot. <3
Alex is growing like a weed. He's up to 30 pounds at 14 months old! He's wearing mostly 24month size clothes. He has yet to walk, that lug. He says "Ah-ee" for Abby- ALL THE TIME. LOL He says Dah/Dadadada for Chas. He says Ewee for Kelly. He says EEEE for kitty and leaf and tree. Cutest is "MOO" for moon. <3 Not sure if he says anything for me. He says "mamamama" but it seems random. He says "oooh-eee" and I think maybe that's for me sometimes? Anyway, it's fun to listen to him. :)
Thanksgiving this week, then three more weeks of school before Christmas break. Where does time go??

Catching up...
OK, so a friend of mine was teasing me for NOT blogging all summer- what can I say, I do better when I'm on a schedule and in a routine!! :)So, to catch up:
We had a super busy summer- lots of fun!! We went to museums, playdates, farms, parks, beaches, and grandma's houses. :)
My big girl turned five, had an awesome birthday party, and danced her heart out in a ve
ry cool recital.My boy went from bump on a log to motor-scooter, crawling ALL OVER THE PLACE. Chubbers holds his spot in the 95th percentile. Yes, looks like my 8 pound 35 weeker is staying at the top of the charts! Can't believe my baby is ONE YEAR OLD!!
Abby started kindergarten, and after 3 days was splitting her time between K and 1st gr
ade. Two weeks of this and she's now a full time first grader. My barely 5 year old, a first grader. WOW! Doesn't time go fast enough as it is?? So super proud of her though!I'm teaching at a new school (new to me, that is). I'm happy to be back in an elementary school, excited to be in the same building with Abby, and thrilled at the camaraderie of the folks I am working with. The energy in this building is FABULOUS! I couldn't be happier. :)
I've blogged a lot about my journey to healthy... well, I must say that the train has derailed. I find it easier for me to control my eating when other parts of my life are out of control (like, I can control this one thing, KWIM?)... Well, things are going well, and I'm having trouble pulling the healthy thing back together. I'm embarrassed to say that I've gained back most of what I lost over the last year. :( I'm happy at work and in my family life right now, and it's hard to convince me to go to the gym, when I'm so looking forward to rehashing the day with my hubby, helpin

Updates all around
Life has been hectic lately. :) SO here are a few updates.
OH, and not sure if scrappy Sunday will happen today- I'm busy working on Abby's birthday stuff!
ME:I've been super slack in my quest to be healthy, lately. After losing 25 pounds, I gained 5 back and have been bouncing that 5 pounds around (yo-yoing bad) for about 2 months. I'm back on the wagon- joined LA Fitness last week and have made it three times so far. Gotta get back in the hang of logging my food- I've definitely let that go out the window- and then I'll be losing like I was before. ;) I've got to get back on the "budget" bandwagon, too. Between furlough days and the fact that I used up all my sick days and now all days off are unpaid, my check isn't stretching as much as it used to. By time I pay insurance, student loans, formula, diapers, and maybe one trip for gas and groceries- I'm out. *sigh* Hopefully this summer I'll be able to kinda start over.
CHAS:Found out that he'll get to switch schedules soon. I don't know how he handles the night shift- I don't think I could do it- but this new schedule will let us see him more. He'll still be working nights, but now he'll be working true nights- working while we sleep- and he'll be home during the day- sleeping while we're at school- then we'll be able to have dinner together and actually feel like a family. :) Like I said, I don't know how he does it, but it sure will be nice to actually see him every day- and while we're both awake at that!
ABBY:She's doing well. Reading like a true bookworm. She's reading chapter books now- though I must say, her attention span hasn't quite caught up with her reading ability. She can read for hours on end, but if she puts the book down, she doesn't have the pull to pick it back up the next day- she often reaches for a new book instead. LOL Still loving school (though she's looking forward to all our adventures this summer!). She has a dance recital the first weekend of June and she can't wait. It's going to be great. :)
ALEX:
The chunky monkey is sitting up strong and can get around, though we've got no true crawling yet. :) Found out today at lunch that he likes refried beans just as much as his sister does (and did at that age, too). I can't believe he'll be one soon! Time goes WAY too fast.
We had family pictures done last week. Lori took them as a fundraiser for our mommy group. It's always nice to get to actually be IN some of the pictures!! :) I posted them on facebook, but here they are again, because I love them so much. :)

Yay!
It has been a rough week or so. Health issues- I had a skin cancer scare- but as far as we know everything is fine. Almost missed the window to register Abby for Kindergarten- DOH! Issues with getting tags for the SUV- what a hassle. Work has been stressful (a certain county office personnel was told by HER supervisor to come tell us what to do and then stay and make sure we did it. Now THAT'S a vote of confidence, huh?)... Found out that I'll be teaching ESOL in an Elementary school next year- a shock to the system, but I'm excited about it. :) And FINALLY- spring break has arrived. :) :) :) Picnic and egg hunt with "the mommies" tomorrow, church on Sunday, and then we're OFF TO WASHINGTON DC!! I can't wait! :)

This week...
On Sunday I worked with a personal trainer for the first time! I got in free with a friend of a friend- I really liked the trainer, and it was definitely a GREAT workout! Trying to figure out when I can fit in regular sessions, and I'm excited to see the eventual results! :)
In other news, Abby is kissing people at school, and Alex has outgrown nearly all his clothes. He needs 12 months size now! Crazy!!

This week in our house.
ABBY
She is such a special kid. Monday night, she asked me "At school, we're making boxes for Haiti- are you doing that, too?" My first thought was 'what does she know about Haiti?'... but I forget. The girl forgets nothing, and absorbs information like a sponge. :) I asked "What's Haiti?" She replied that it's a state, and when I corrected her, saying 'country', she said "Oh, yeah." :) Then I asked "Why do we need to make 'boxes for Haiti'?" She told me that they had an earthquake there. She didn't really have any other information, so this prompted a lengthy discussion about both earthquakes and the current conditions in Haiti... all while we made dinner. I must have mentioned something along the lines of "since some things are hard to mail, a lot of people are sending money". She thought for a minute and responded with "but if people's homes are messed up, aren't the stores messed up, too? How can they even buy what they need?" I told her that some people were going over to help them, and that they would take items with them. She asked if we could go. I told her no and she wanted to know why. We again discussed the location of Haiti and the fact that it's an island. And the fact that we have school. ;) She seemed content, but disappointed that she couldn't help first hand. I've since found out that a friend's husband is going over with his Army battalion- she's excited to "know" someone who's there helping! I'm so proud of my sweet, empathetic girl.
ALEX
Alex is getting so big. He's almost 20 pounds! He'll be in 12 month clothes by the time he's 6 months at this rate!! Glad I got the "infant seat" with a higher weight limit, or he'd be nearly done with it already! We've just started him on rice cereal (he had it a few times last month, but not consistently) and he LOVES it. :) I can't believe he'll be 6 months old in a few weeks! He can roll from his tummy to his back in both directions (right and left). He can really get his "bouncey seat" bouncing- he kicks his legs so hard. He enjoys his exersaucer and his bumbo seat, and doesn't like to lay down or be held in a reclining position- seems for fear that he'll miss something- I think he gets that from his sister. ;)

We're working. Trying to keep the house up and the bills paid. :) I'm getting a "new" car in the next couple weeks- I'm buying my grandpa's Chevy Trailblazer from my grandma. I'm not looking forward to the significantly fewer miles per gallon- and a car payment, too- but it will be so nice to have more room in the car. The four doors will be fabulous, too. :) And as silly as it sounds, it will be nice to have something of his, especially a vehicle since we spent so much time together on trip and when he would drive me to and from Gainesville, in college. I know it's a new car- not the one we rode together in- but still. <3

My smarty pants.
I had Abby take the Star Reading Test yesterday- it is a test on the computer that can tell at what level a child reads. I've used it at work with my students for years, and couldn't resist any longer- I stuck Abby on the computer when she came over to my school yesterday afternoon.
I peeked over her shoulder a few times and was frustrated that it seemed like she would daydream between questions. LOL If you wait too long, it skips ahead!
Well, her results blew my mind. Her score was 2.1- meaning she reads at a second grade level! For you teachers out there, her ZPD is 2.1-3.1.
The girl amazes me every single day. :)
