Healthy Living...

I'm not going all out terrible- but things are a little too hectic (with the end of school and Abby's birthday, though thank goodness the latter is done with!) to have "healthfulness" at the forefront of my mind. Back on track 100% when school's out. It won't be easy though- Idle hands make me hungry! :)

OMG- an observation of the fitness of our sixth graders

Oh my goodness. At my school, we have three days of Activity Days in the spring ("Field Day")- one for 6th grade, one for 7th, and one for 8th. In the past, when I taught elementary school, it was similar- usually one or two grades had field day at a time.

As a "connections teacher," I am on the team that runs the show. My job for the last three years has been that of "recorder"- I stand at the finish line and record who comes in first, second, etc.

So... In all my years of field day, I have never experienced anything like today.

Ah, and for the record, it was NOT too hot- it is gorgeous outside- sunny and warm with a nice breeze all morning!!

First event: First group of boys 400 meter run. One student gets dizzy and lays down. Second event:

Second group 400m boys. Student who comes in second immediately falls to the ground and siezes. He has a history of seizures and probably should not have been slated to run- but he signed himself up and the teacher let him. An ambulance is called for him. EMT looks at kid#1 and calls for backup to take care of him. Both are taken away.

At this point, we'd halted the events- kids and teachers waiting in the stands while the ambulances clear out. A good HOUR of down time.

Word spreads that kid #1 didn't eat any breakfast. Kids are grilled and those who didn't eat breakfast are told they will not participate in any running events.

The decision is made to skip the rest of the 400 meter (one lap around the track) and 100 meter (one straight-away) races and go for the 4x100 relay. Many kids (and a few parents who came to watch) are very disappointed to miss their events.

Relays: three more kids end up laying in the shade with their feet up being attended to by the nurse.

Obstacle course: two more kids down!

The final event was tug-o-war. Several kids were CARRIED INTO THE BUILDING!

When I got inside, there was one ambulance already there, one on the way, and they were calling for another! There were three kids laid up in the conference room- three in the clinic- and two in the office.

What the hell???

Some teachers are saying that after the first one (the epileptic) that most of the rest were just drama-cases and attention-seekers. (If this is the case, I hope they get their butt beat for 1) ruining it for everyone else and 2) making their parents pay for a ride in an ambulance and trip to the ER!)

Some teachers are saying that many of them had no water- and worse, that many drank lots of soda, coffee, and ENERGY DRINKS this morning. Seriously people- DO NOT LET YOUR 12 year olds have energy drinks. Really.

Some are saying that the kids didn't eat properly and that it was a blood sugar issue.

Many are saying that it's the fact that they are not used to PLAYING, RUNNING, or simply exerting themselves at all. That they are not used to being outside.

Whatever the reason, it's quite ridiculous. Seriously? 13 students requiring an ambulance at field day? No bones broken, no fights... just falling out?

Sheesh.

Back on the "Journey to Health" bandwagon

OK. Instead of just having it as the tag line for my blog title... I'm actually going to start logging here- weigh ins, calories, etc. I've gotta put this out there for the world to see- because being accountable to me just isn't cutting it anymore.

History:
Highest weight- while pregnant with Alex (320-ish?)Started keeping track- 305 (Oct 1, 2009)Stalled out and regained some of my weight lost through the holidays/ funerals/ etc of late 2009. Restarted Jan 1, 2010 and lost almost 30 pounds before stalling out again.Back on track for good! I would love to reach the 50 pound mark by July... Lofty goal, but it is possible!

Plan:
I'm not following any specific plan. I'm doing what I can to eat healthful foods and cut out the crap- though I have SUCH a weakness for fast food. It's ridiculous, really. Trying to budget more financially which will help cut out the fastfood, too. I try to preportion nearly everything when I get home from the grocery. All cereal, crackers, snacks- get weighed and go into ziplock bags. THis really helps!! I count calories on SparkPeople.com, though not every day- kind of helps me keep on track and gives me a reality check when needed. SOme days it just isn't convenient to do so, so I try to stick to the foods and serving sizes that I know are "safe". There are definitely days when I don't monitor well (or at all)- and there have been way too many of those lately!! Back on track now!!

Fitness:
After having Alex- at the end of 2009- I really didn't exercise at first. Starting in Jan 2010, I worked out several times a week with a coworker after school, doing DVDs in my classroom. At the start of this month, I joined LAFitness and my goal is to get there 4 times a week. It hasn't happened yet (I'm doing more like 2), but May is SUCH a crazy month around here, that I have confidence that I will get there.

Love you guys and all the support you provide!!

Time Capsule?

I am thinking of making a time capsule. It started with the idea to make one for Abby, but I'm toying with the idea of starting one for Alex, too (or maybe waiting until a similar milestone- end of pre-K/ turning 5 or something). I thought I'd mention it here since many of us have kids starting (or finishing) kindergarten this year- maybe someone else would want to make one too- and if not, maybe you all could help me with ideas!! :)

I know I have the scrapbooks- and so many people say they scrapbook "for the kids"... well, honestly, I don't. I scrapbook for ME. Because I like to and because I love looking at photographs, too. I don't want to give the books to the kids when they are adults- I'll leave them in my will. SO, I was thinking that it would be cool to have something that IS for them to have... and the idea of time capsule came up. I was also thinking that as Abby starts "real school"- that "real graduation" will be here ALL TOO SOON!

My general idea (for the moment, it's certainly evolving) is to create a time capsule that will be a snapshot of this year- the year she begins school- for her to open in 2023- the year she graduates high school. I'm toying with the idea of it being something I can add to each year at the end of the school year- maybe an envelope from each year? I like the idea of including photos, a letter from me &/or DH, a questionaire where Abby lists her favorite things, ticket stubs, etc... What do you think? Any ideas? Want to join me? :)

OK- Scrappy Sunday, but just a little. :)

Updates all around

Life has been hectic lately. :) SO here are a few updates.

OH, and not sure if scrappy Sunday will happen today- I'm busy working on Abby's birthday stuff!

ME:I've been super slack in my quest to be healthy, lately. After losing 25 pounds, I gained 5 back and have been bouncing that 5 pounds around (yo-yoing bad) for about 2 months. I'm back on the wagon- joined LA Fitness last week and have made it three times so far. Gotta get back in the hang of logging my food- I've definitely let that go out the window- and then I'll be losing like I was before. ;) I've got to get back on the "budget" bandwagon, too. Between furlough days and the fact that I used up all my sick days and now all days off are unpaid, my check isn't stretching as much as it used to. By time I pay insurance, student loans, formula, diapers, and maybe one trip for gas and groceries- I'm out. *sigh* Hopefully this summer I'll be able to kinda start over.

CHAS:Found out that he'll get to switch schedules soon. I don't know how he handles the night shift- I don't think I could do it- but this new schedule will let us see him more. He'll still be working nights, but now he'll be working true nights- working while we sleep- and he'll be home during the day- sleeping while we're at school- then we'll be able to have dinner together and actually feel like a family. :) Like I said, I don't know how he does it, but it sure will be nice to actually see him every day- and while we're both awake at that!

ABBY:She's doing well. Reading like a true bookworm. She's reading chapter books now- though I must say, her attention span hasn't quite caught up with her reading ability. She can read for hours on end, but if she puts the book down, she doesn't have the pull to pick it back up the next day- she often reaches for a new book instead. LOL Still loving school (though she's looking forward to all our adventures this summer!). She has a dance recital the first weekend of June and she can't wait. It's going to be great. :)
ALEX:
The chunky monkey is sitting up strong and can get around, though we've got no true crawling yet. :) Found out today at lunch that he likes refried beans just as much as his sister does (and did at that age, too). I can't believe he'll be one soon! Time goes WAY too fast.

We had family pictures done last week. Lori took them as a fundraiser for our mommy group. It's always nice to get to actually be IN some of the pictures!! :) I posted them on facebook, but here they are again, because I love them so much. :)

Scrappy Sunday! Really! :)

I DID have a scrappy Sunday- just forgot to post! LOL Here are the layouts that I worked on this weekend. :)
